Mia Medina har endelig fundet det perfekte fokus for sin PhD afhandling om Alzheimer. I de kommende måneder vil hun følge Deborah Logan, der lider af den forfærdelige sygdom. Deborahs datter Sarah har tænkt sig at passe sin mor selv, i hendes eget hjem, og tanken er, at Mias kameraer skal følge deres hverdag, mens moderen stille og roligt mister sin forstand. Efterhånden som sygdomme tager fat, sker der dog også noget andet med Deborah. Det er som om "noget" har taget kontrollen over hende. Noget, der er meget værre end en sygdom.
